Getting a Protection Order
In Ohio, you can seek a Civil Protection Order against the person who is
abusing you. If you seek a CPO, you have a right to ask for what they call an
"ex-parte" hearing. This allows you to ask for a Protection Order so that when
your abuser is served with papers, he/she can also be served with an order to
stay away from you until your court hearing. You can also call Haven House
at 740-477-9113 to ask for an advocate to help you with your legal options.
You DO NOT have to call Police to get a Civil Protection Order.

Create a Personalized Safety Plan
What's a safety plan you ask? A safety plan is exactly what it says. A plan to keep you and your family safe. Your safety is the most important thing. Every plan is different and created specifically to your needs. Below, are some things to keep in mind when creating a safety plan.
* Keep a copy of all your important papers (birth certificates, social security cards, shot records, bank accounts, immigration papers etc.)
* Make sure you have important phone numbers on you (Police, Sheriff, Friends, Family, Shelter, etc.)
* Talk to your neighbors. Make a plan that if they see the porch light on to call 911 or the curtains pulled to the left / right. Find whatever is going to work for you.
* Practice leaving your house in a hurry. Practice with your kids.
* Create a safe word that you use on the phone with friends and family. If you use that word they know to call 911.
* Have a bag of extra clothing packed and ready to go. If you feel unsafe leaving these things in the house, keep an extra bag with family or friends.
